HDMI, SDI or fibre: how to plan video connections at a venue

    Specify the source, destination, actual cable route and picture format together. The connector name alone cannot tell you whether the complete video chain will work.

    Plan a chain, not an isolated cable

    Choose the connection after the technical team knows the source output, destination input, required picture format and real route between them. HDMI and SDI describe different video interfaces. Fibre describes an optical transport medium: a fibre system may carry a particular video interface or a manufacturer's transport protocol. It is not automatically a third interchangeable video format.

    The practical request is a connection plan covering every adapter, converter, extender, patch point and power supply. A cable that works between a laptop and a nearby monitor does not validate an event chain with additional processing and a different route.

    Do not apply a universal maximum HDMI distance from a rule of thumb, or assume any BNC connection supports every SDI signal. The selected cable and equipment documentation must support the required route and format. Also ask whether a proposed converter changes only the interface or can scale and convert timing; those are different capabilities.

    Write the picture format in full

    “4K” leaves unresolved details such as exact pixel dimensions and frame rate. Provide the source's planned output mode and have the technical team confirm the compatible mode at each stage. Include relevant colour and audio requirements, plus any protection applied by the source.

    Blackmagic Design's converter specifications list supported formats for individual models and state that their HDMI inputs cannot capture protected HDMI sources. The buyer's lesson is to check the precise model and actual content path. A converter is not a way to assume protected streaming content will become available to any event system.

    For optical systems, compatibility goes beyond matching plugs. Extron's FOX II T HD 4K manual describes a proprietary optical stream to compatible FOX II receivers, with defined fibre variants and EDID management. An optical transmitter from one system should therefore not be paired with an arbitrary receiver merely because the connector looks right.

    Hypothetical example: the route is longer than the room

    Suppose a laptop is 20 m from the display in a straight line. The agreed route runs 18 m along a wall, 12 m around the stage and 10 m to the control position, with 5 m allocated for the documented rises and final connections. The planned route is 45 m, not 20 m. These are invented planning inputs, not a recommendation for a particular transmission product.

    The technician compares suitable transport arrangements using that route and the actual laptop and display formats. If conversion to SDI is proposed, confirm both directions and the accepted signal. If optical extension is proposed, include the matching endpoints and their power. Then test the entire route with the real programme material, including audio.

    A later move of the control desk changes the route. Update the plan and ask the team to reassess it before the event, rather than adding an unplanned extension at the end of a chain that was already near its documented capability.

    Include what happens around the signal

    Mark who provides access to patch panels and which crew protects cables where routes cross working or visitor areas. Identify equipment that needs local power. Agree how the team labels source and destination ends, particularly for directional cables or converters.

    Test source reconnection and the intended switching sequence as well as continuous playback. A stable picture after initial setup does not explain what happens when a speaker replaces the laptop. Record the agreed operating mode and fallback so the operator does not need to rediscover them during a session.

    • A test covering playback, source changes and the agreed recovery method.
