LED walls on camera: how to plan for moiré, bands and flicker

    A screen can look good to the audience and still produce a poor recording. Book a joint camera-and-LED test around the actual shots, content and lighting before approving the display.

    Approve a recorded image, not a specification alone

    If your event will be filmed, tell the LED supplier before choosing the screen. Provide the camera team's planned shots and recording settings. A high advertised refresh rate is not, by itself, proof that every camera will capture a clean image. The useful acceptance test is footage made with the intended combination of screen, processing, camera, lens, content and lighting.

    Distinguish two outputs in the brief: the room audience's experience and the recorded or streamed programme. If both matter, both need approval. Changing the screen brightness to improve a shot also changes the stage environment, so camera and lighting decisions should be made together.

    Sony's Camera and Display Plugin guide describes moiré as dependent on camera-to-display distance, angle and lens settings. This is why a demonstration from a convenient single position cannot approve every planned shot. It is also why a change of framing can invalidate an earlier result.

    Brompton's ShutterSync documentation explains matching display timing to camera exposure and still recommends camera tests. Such controls are equipment-specific; ask what the proposed system actually supports.

    Send a short filming brief

    • Output: live stream, recorded interview, social clips or several deliverables, with the required formats.

    • Cameras: planned models, lenses, positions, movements and frame rates, supplied by the video team.

    • Framing: how much LED appears behind the subject and whether the screen itself needs to remain sharply readable.

    • Content: representative slides, detailed patterns, brand colours, dark scenes and motion.

    • Lighting: intended stage arrangement and who can approve changes during rehearsal.

    Do not ask the event organiser to guess technical camera settings. Assign a contact from each discipline and have them exchange the missing information. Flag any camera or slow-motion requirement added after the screen has been agreed.

    Worked example: a two-camera conference

    Assume a hypothetical conference with a wide camera at the back and a second camera taking close shots of speakers. A test from the back looks acceptable. That result approves only that tested combination; the tighter view may frame the LED differently and use another lens setting.

    Prepare a test sequence containing a title slide, a fine diagram, a dark branded background and moving video. Record it first with the wide camera, then with the close camera and a stand-in at the lectern. Include the planned zoom range and movements. Review both recordings at the intended output size, then inspect the actual streamed feed if streaming is part of the job.

    If a close shot fails, have the camera and LED specialists test one agreed change at a time. Record the setting and consequence, including any effect on the wide shot or the room audience. This creates a usable decision log instead of a collection of disconnected “looks better” impressions.

    What to approve at the end of the test

    1. Confirm acceptable shots and record camera positions, screen settings and the tested content version.

    2. List any restricted framing or settings and make the camera team aware of them.

    3. Agree who can change the configuration and when another check is required.

    4. Keep the reference clips and repeat the essential checks after installation at the venue.

    Allow time for this work in the schedule and quotation. Testing after the audience arrives removes the opportunity to adjust the setup properly. A photograph taken on an unplanned phone is useful evidence of a problem, but it is not a substitute for checking the specified production cameras.

    Include filming requirements in your LED rental enquiry and coordinate them with technical support. Start with the screen configuration and the intended recording, rather than asking for a guaranteed refresh-rate number.
