How to choose touchscreen size and position for an event

    Choose a touchscreen by testing the visitor's complete task at the proposed height and angle. A larger image helps spectators, but controls must remain readable, reachable and comfortable for the person using it.

    Size the working area, not just the display

    The useful size of a touchscreen depends on who operates it and what they must touch. A product demonstration can benefit from an image large enough for several people to see. A registration form needs a comfortable keyboard and a position that avoids exposing entries to people waiting nearby. The same diagonal does not solve both tasks equally well.

    Separate the display into a viewing area and an interaction area. Product imagery may extend across the surface while the main controls stay within a tested, reachable zone. Do not automatically spread buttons into all four corners because a large screen provides the space.

    These are design options, not confirmation that every touchscreen supports every position. Ask the supplier to check the selected display, enclosure and mount together, including ventilation and approved orientation. A physical arrangement shown in a render still needs an installation review.

    Make a full-size mock-up before choosing the model

    Mark the proposed active image on a board or wall and print the important controls at their intended physical size. Test the top navigation, lower confirmation button and keyboard area from the actual approach direction. Include representative standing and seated users and let them perform the task without coaching.

    Then repeat on the real display with the application running. Screen scaling can change the size of controls; a desktop screenshot does not capture touch behaviour. The W3C guidance on enhanced target size explains why larger targets can reduce accidental actions. CSS pixels describe an interface measure, so a physical kiosk still needs testing on its actual hardware.

    Record what failed: a control required leaning, a palm triggered another action, text disappeared behind the keyboard or a visitor could not locate the back button. Change the layout or position and repeat the same task. “It looks good” is less useful than a record showing that visitors can complete it.

    Worked example: choosing between two stand layouts

    Imagine a hypothetical catalogue with product pictures above a row of category buttons and a comparison tray. The team considers a large upright display beside the entrance and a smaller angled kiosk inside the stand. In the first mock-up, seated users cannot comfortably reach the top category row, and people waiting obscure the entrance graphic.

    Moving the categories into a central control band fixes the first issue without shrinking the product imagery. Moving the queue inside the stand addresses the second, but reduces space for conversations. The angled kiosk gives a more private interaction, while fewer spectators can follow it.

    The decision now follows the intended outcome. Choose the revised upright layout if shared demonstrations matter most, or the angled layout if independent browsing is the priority. Confirm both with the final enclosure and floor plan; this example does not establish a universal screen size or mounting height.

    Look beyond the screen outline

    Include the base, enclosure depth, operator, assistant and waiting visitor in the plan. Check whether someone leaving crosses the next person's approach. Keep cables and service access in the technical layout, and have the venue review access routes. Do not count the screen width as the entire footprint.

    Check glare with the stand lighting and daylight conditions expected during the event. A readable welcome screen may hide reflections that become obvious on dark product images. Test the least favourable important content, not only the brightest promotional slide.

    Approval checklist

    • Confirm the main task, language versions and whether one person or a group participates.

    • Trial every essential control at the proposed height, angle and display scaling.

    • Review seated access, assistance options, readable text and the full route through the interface.

    • Show the base, queue, cable route and service area on the floor plan.

    • Approve the real hardware orientation and mounting arrangement with the supplier.

    Frequent mistakes are selecting by diagonal alone, testing only with the designer, placing essential buttons at unreachable edges and discovering reflections after installation. Send a floor plan and working interface to the touchscreen equipment team. For an interface that needs restructuring, include interactive installation design in the scope.
